Oversize Alaskan Malamute and Things Need to Know

Alaskan Malamute is always ranked in the Top 10 most popular dog breeds in Vietnam. Everyone loves them due to their charming appearance as well as friendly and loyal personalities. In Vietnam, Alaska Malamute is classified into 3 types based on their sizes: StandardOversize and Giant Alaskan. This article unpacks everything that you need to know about the second largest type of this sled dog breed - Oversize Alaskan.

1. Common features of the Alaskan Malamute breed

Lineage:

The Alaskan Malamute dogs are native to Alaska, USA. According to American Kennel Club (AKC), the breed’s name is derived from the Mahlemiut, Inuit people who resided in Kotzebue Sound in northwestern Alaska. This breed is believed to be a descendant of the domesticated wolf-dogs who accompanied the Paleolithic hunters that crossed the land bridges of the Bering Strait and migrated into North America roughly 4,000 years ago. Today, they are the mascot of the state of Alaska, USA.

A study in 2013 shows that the Alaskan Malamute contains a possible admixture of the Siberian Husky. The Alaskan Malamute first became registrable with the AKC in 1935.

Appearance:

The Alaskan Malamute has a distinctive appearance with large size and a long, ruffled coat. They also have a variety of colors such as black - white, gray - white, brown - red, etc. Their rarest color is different shades of red, leading to informal descriptions including orange, peach, and apricot. The rarer the color is, the more valuable the dog gets.

The Alaskan Malamute's eyes are almond-shaped and come in varied shades of brown. Purebred Alaskan Malamute dogs do not have blue eyes.

Ages:

The average lifespan of Alaskan Malamute dog breed is from 12 to 16 years. If they live in arctic regions, their life expectancy may increase up to 13 or even 17 years. In tropical regions as Vietnam, this breed’s life expectancy will be about 10 to 12 years.

Personality:

Oversize Alaskan has a huge appearance that may scare children. However, like other Alaskan Malamute, they have a warm heart. The breed is quite affectionate that love to be cared by their owners. They are friendly and love children. They can play, participate in sport, or even look after children. Especially, this breed is very loyal and obedient to their owners.

Alaskan Malamute is one of the most intelligent, agile, quick learning and exercise-loving breeds. Therefore, owners should regularly spend time with them for walking and doing exercise in large ground instead of locking them up for a long time that may cause them stressed and aggressive.

2. Nutrition and Exercise

Each breed of dog has its own personality, nutritional needs with different foods and special exercise. Alaskan Malamute is no exception.

If an Alaskan Malamute was born in arctic regions, then moved to a tropical country as Vietnam; they have to adapt for a totally new different environment that may cause some problems of health. In order to protect their health, owners need to provide them a full of nutrient diet and suitable exercise regimen. For the ones that is bred in Vietnam, it is easier to take care of them because they have adapted to the monsoon environment since birth.

Intestinal diseases in Alaska Malamute and nutrition:

Intestinal diseases are the most popular problems in Alaska Malamute. Their digestive system is quite weak and prone to intestinal disease. Therefore, to help an Alaskan Malamute dog have a healthy life, the owner should feed them a good quality diet that contain adequate amounts of protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals. In addition, clean foods with careful processing and guaranteed origins within its best use dates also help protect their intestines.

Exercise for Alaska Malamute dogs:

In addition to a healthy diet, you also need to balance the exercise regimen to give Alaska Oversize the best development with a gorgeous appearance and great health. You should spend at least 30 minutes giving them daily exercise such as walking, sledding, or simple active games like fetching with a ball. This way does not only increase their physical condition, but also helps them release energy and become more intimate with the owner. By regular practices, your dog will enhance their intelligence and agility.
